Research at the European Society of Ocular Inflammation (EUSOI)

The European Society of Ocular Inflammation (EUSOI) promotes high-quality research and scientific exchange in all aspects of ocular inflammation. Through its network of clinicians and scientists, EUSOI aims to advance knowledge, improve patient outcomes, and support the development of evidence-based standards of care across Europe and beyond.

Research Focus

EUSOI supports a broad range of clinical and translational research related to ocular inflammatory disease. Topics of interest typically include intraocular inflammation such as uveitis, inflammatory disorders of the ocular surface and sclera, and complications affecting the retina, optic nerve, and other ocular structures.

Research may also address systemic immune-mediated diseases with ocular involvement, novel diagnostic tools and imaging techniques, emerging therapies and treatment strategies, outcome measures and registries, and epidemiological studies. The scope is intentionally broad to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of ocular inflammation and its impact on ophthalmology, rheumatology, immunology, and related fields.

Facilitating Collaboration

A society such as EUSOI provides a structured platform to connect clinicians, scientists, and allied health professionals with an interest in ocular inflammation. By bringing together expertise from multiple disciplines and centres, EUSOI helps to generate research ideas, refine study questions, and promote harmonised approaches to patient care and data collection.

Through its activities, EUSOI can encourage multicentre and cross-border projects, support the development of shared protocols, and facilitate the creation of collaborative networks and registries. This collaborative environment strengthens the evidence base for clinical decision-making and accelerates the translation of research findings into practice.

Scientific Meetings and Abstracts

Scientific meetings and congresses are central to EUSOI’s mission to promote research in ocular inflammation. These events provide a forum for presenting original data, sharing clinical experience, and critically appraising emerging evidence.

Abstract and poster sessions allow investigators to disseminate their work, receive feedback from peers, and identify opportunities for collaboration. Plenary lectures, symposia, and panel discussions help to place new findings in context and to shape future research priorities in the field.

Opportunities for Young Investigators

EUSOI recognises the importance of supporting trainees and early-career researchers in ophthalmology and related specialties. Involvement in research projects, participation in abstract and poster sessions, and engagement in scientific discussions are essential steps in developing the next generation of experts in ocular inflammation.

Through networking opportunities, informal mentorship, and the possibility of recognition through competitive presentations or travel support, EUSOI seeks to create an environment in which young investigators can build collaborations, gain experience in multicentre work, and contribute meaningfully to the field.

Future Research Resources

This page is intended to develop into a practical hub for research in ocular inflammation within the EUSOI community. Over time, it may host links to key publications and guidelines, information about ongoing collaborative projects, and general calls for participation in studies or registries.

Additional resources could include methodological guidance, templates for study documentation, and signposts to training opportunities relevant to clinical research and trial design in ocular inflammation.

Get Involved

Clinicians and researchers with an interest in ocular inflammation are warmly invited to engage with EUSOI. By joining the society, attending scientific meetings, and sharing ideas for collaborative projects, members can help to advance knowledge and improve care for patients with ocular inflammatory disease.
